Sheet Metal Worker Education Requirements
The Sheet Metal Workers Union Local Union #12 continually invests in our workers’ futures through our Continuing Education Training Program.
Our journeypersons are able to update their skills and knowledge by working with the newest technologies and tools available in the industry! Training for Journeypersons and Apprentices through the SMWIA Local #12 Joint Apprenticeship Training Center (JATC) includes:

AUTOCAD
This course is designed for all members as a basic introduction to computer aided drafting, with instruction based on the AutoCAD family of programs.
Class covers computer basics, AutoCAD commands, file management, drawing set-up, drafting layers etc.
- 36 hours total – Max 12 Participants
- Classes meet 6 pm – 9 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays
- Starting Tuesday, February 28, 2023
Fire and Smoke Damper Technician
Certification for fire and smoke damper inspection. The class focuses on material needed to prepare for the Fire Smoke Damper Technician certification test.
The last class will be the ICB Certification test for Fire Smoke Damper Technician.
- 18 hours total – Max 12 Participants
- Classes meet 6 pm – 9 pm, Mondays and Wednesdays
- Starting Monday, March 6th, 2023
FIRST AID AND CPR
This class will cover the American Heart Association Heart Saver First Aid and CPR course materials.
Students will review First aid procedures and practice CPR techniques and AED usage.
- 4 hours total – Max 30 Participants
- Class meets 5 pm – 9 pm, Monday, March 20, 2023
OSHA 30
This course is designed to introduce members to the basic practices of safety and identifying, reducing, eliminating, and reporting hazards associated with their work.
Class will cover construction safety standards found in 29 CFR 1926. OSHA 30 cards will be issued after the completion of class.
- 30 hours total – Max 30 Participants
- Classes meet 6 pm – 9 pm, Mondays and Wednesdays
- Starting Monday, February 27, 2023
GMAW
The course is designed to enhance members’ welding skills using the GMAW (MIG) process. Classroom instruction and labs will be focused on preparing for the AWS D9.1 sheet metal welding certification test.
- 36 hours total – Max 12 Participants
- Classes meet 6 pm – 9 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays
- Starting Tuesday, February 28, 2023
BASIC SMAW
This course is designed to enhance members’ skills in structural welding using the SMAW (stick) process. Class instruction and labs will be focused on preparing for the AWS D1.1 structural plate steel qualification test.
- 36 hours total – Max 12 Participants
- Classes meet 6 pm – 9 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays
