Sheet Metal Worker Education Requirements
The Sheet Metal Workers Union Local Union #12 continually invests in our workers’ futures through our Continuing Education Training Program.
Our journeypersons are able to update their skills and knowledge by working with the newest technologies and tools available in the industry! Training for Journeypersons and Apprentices through the SMWIA Local #12 Joint Apprenticeship Training Center (JATC) includes:

REVIT/Auto Cad
Revit Class Will go from no experience to building 3D duct models, learning about creating projects, with multiple levels, using families and custom creative content for practical application. In addition to Revit, we will use Fabrications software to design our duct systems that will correspond to shop downloads. by the end of class each student will have the basic understanding of Revit in a 3D model environment.

- Classes meet 5 pm – 8 pm, Mondays and Wednesday

Fire and Smoke Damper Technician 2nd edition
Certification for fire and smoke damper inspection. The class focuses on material needed to prepare for the Fire Smoke Damper Technician certification test.
The last class will be the ICB Certification test for Fire Smoke Damper Technician.
- 18 hours total – Max 15 Participants
- Classes meet 5 pm – 8 pm, Tuesday and Thursday
- Starting Tuesday, October 10, 2023
ADVANCED GMAW
The courses designed to enhance members skill in welding using the GMAW welding process. Classroom instruction and labs will be focused on preparing for the light gauge certification test.
Prerquisite Basic GMAW
- 36 hours total – Max 10 Participants
- Class meets 5 pm – 8 pm, Tuesday, October 10, 2023
ADVANCED SMAW
This course is designed to enhance members’ skill in welding using the SMAW welding process. Class instruction and labs will be focused on preparing for a qualification test.
Prerequisite Basic SMAW
- 66 hours total – Max 10 Participants
- Classes meet 5 pm – 8 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays
- Starting Tuesday October 10, 2023
BASIC GMAW
The class is designed to teach the fundamentals of the GMAW welding process, welding safety, and proper PPE usage.
Classroom instructions and welding lab time will focus on machine set up, machine maintenance, and welding fundamentals needed to become a proficient welder.
- 36 hours total – Max 5 Participants
- Classes meet 5 pm – 8 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays
- Starting Tuesday, October 10, 2023
HVAC SERVICE
This class will concentrate on electrical safety, and fundamentals of electricity for HVAC service work.
Electrical safety, fundamentals of electricity, electrical test equipment, motors, electrical components, and diagrams.
- 40 hours total – Max 12 Participants
- Classes meet 7 am – 3:30 pm, Saturday
- Starting Saturday October 7, 2023
LAGGING
This is an intense hands-on lab course and is geared toward securing our work at power plants, and other industrial facilities. this class can teach you the basic layout and hands skills needed to be proficient in the lagging process.
- 30 hours total – Max 12 Participants
- Classes meet 5pm – 8 pm, Monday and Wednesday
