Sheet Metal Worker Education Requirements

The Sheet Metal Workers Union Local Union #12 continually invests in our workers’ futures through our Continuing Education Training Program.

Sheet Metal Worker Education Requirements

autocad

This course is designed to introduce the members to AutoCAD.

If you are interested in becoming a draft person this is where you start.

This course covers AutoCAD commands, file management, drawing set-up, layers etc.

  • 36 hours total – Max 20 Participants
  • Classes meet 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm, Mondays and Wednesdays
  • Starting Monday, February 2nd, 2026

REVIT

This course is designed to inftroduce the members to REVIT. 

Building information Medling (BIM) software program that allows users to design, document, and visualize 3D models of building.

This course covers the basics of REVIT from schematic design through construction documentation.

Students should have a working knowledge of AutoCAD.

  • 36 hours total – Max 20 Participants
  • Classes meet 5 pm – 8 pm, Tuesday’s and Thursday’s
  • Starting Tuesday February 3rd, 2026

BASIC SMAW

The class is designed to teach the fundamentals of the SMAW welding process, welding safety, and proper PPE usage.

Classroom instructions and welding lab time will focus on machine set up; machine maintenance and welding fundamentals needed to become a proficient welder. Class instruction and labs will be focused on preparing for a qualification test.

  • 36 hours total – Max 6-8 Participants
  • Class meets 5 pm – 8 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • Starting Tuesday, January 20th, 2025

FCAW ( Dual Shield) Structural Welding

This course is an accelerated intense lab course designed to prepare for the certification test.  There will be 42 hours of lab time required. The pre-requisites for this clas are either a light gage AWS Cerfication in GMAW or the SMAW structural AWS Certification.

Class instruction and labs will be focused on preparing for a qualification test. 

  • 42 hours total – Max 10-12 Participants
  • Classes meet 5pm – 8pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays
  • Starting Tuesday March 3rd, 2026

LAGGING

This is an intense hands-on lab course and is geared toward securing our work at power plants, and other industrial facilities. this class can teach you the basic layout and hands skills needed to be proficient in the lagging process.

  • 30 hours total – Max 12 Participants
  • Classes meet 5pm – 8 pm, Monday and Wednesday
  • Starting Monday February 2nd, 2026
